Last month I drove over 1,000 miles from Seattle to southern California to make some videos and go on a podcast.
Along the way I stopped to see a fellow Inner Circle member Kyle Barnard and see what him and his window cleaning company were all about.
As soon as we rolled up to his place we got to work.
I said “dude let’s go hit some doors and make a video!”
He thought that was a great idea as we are both workaholics and we hopped in his truck and drove about 15 minutes to a nice little neighborhood.
No planning, no contacts, nothing.
Me and Kyle both have exterior cleaning businesses so we went at it with the goal of selling anything, windows, gutters, roof cleaning, anything we thought the customer might need or want.
We got out and started pounding the pavement and knocking doors.
The first house we went to was perfect. It had just rained the day before and this home had leaves on the roof and overflowing gutters. There was literally water dripping on the front porch!
Yet, I rushed into the sale a bit too fast and the owner of the house said they already had it done and they weren’t interested. Very unlikely but oh well.
We moved on to the next house.
Door to door can be daunting, but as long as you keep moving and don’t allow the rejection to get to you it can be a lot of fun too, especially when doing it with a friend.
You have to remember people aren’t really rejecting you, 99% of the time they just aren’t interested or they are thinking about 1,000 other things and not getting shit on their house cleaned.
But there is still that 1%. And if you’re in a good neighborhood your chances go way up to probaby 5-10% of houses need some sort of service done.
So minimum you need to be knocking 10-20 if not 50 doors before I would even consider going to a different neighborhood or throwing in the towel for the day.
It’s purely a numbers game. He who puts in the right reps and has a dog ass determination will see results.
Anyways, we knocked for over an hour, we talked to a guy who had just gotten the new Tesla Cybertruck, got told no by all sorts of people, even a kid told us we shouldnt be filming and to leave.
Even as seasoned door to door guys it can be a pain in the ass sometimes but we kept at it.
Finally we came to the end of the block. There sat the biggest house, with a nice roof, solar panels and surrounded by palm trees.
I went in and knocked and after explaining why we were in the area and that we were part of a local gutter company I could feel the hook setting in.
This guy was interested.
We quickly said “hey our truck is just down the street let’s get you a free quote just so you know what you’d be looking at”
We went out, grabbed the ladder and got to work.
(actual photo of the house)
Next thing we knew we had quoted him, he said he had to check his schedule or something and as we were putting the ladder away and driving back we got a text confirming over $550 worth of window and roof cleanings.
With just an hour of knocking doors, we pulled in a $500+ job.
Not bad for being in a different state wearing Vans skate shoes and just a carhartt shirt with no company logo or nothing.
Making money is 100% a skill. Most of the things we think matter don’t.
What logo we have, what truck we drive, how many jobs we’ve done the customer doesn’t give a damn about any of that. They just want a clean home and a good result.
That’s all you have to do.
Those who can show this and be in the right place at the right time by persistence and keeping at it can make money wherever and whenever they want.
The thing is, no one will ever teach you this. It is not taught in school, university, or by parents.
This is something you have to learn by yourself.
With blood sweat and tears (that might be a bit overdramatic)
But once you do, you have this skill for life.
Whether that’s door to door, selling, marketing, the ability to generate money out of thin air will ensure you can always make money, and that’s what a man needs to be able to build his foundation on.
So go out and get some reps in.
Go knock doors, go send some cold emails, go do some cold dm’s.
Embrace the rejection and don’t give a flying fuck because it’s just a numbers game, and every no brings you a little bit closer to getting a yes.
Go get some yesses my friend.
And have a nice day.
