When is the best season to remove moss from a roof?

This is a great question I’ve received several times this week and I’ll answer it as best I can.

For starters, I live and work up in the Pacific Northwest over by Seattle.

We get on average 150 days of rain a year and with this plus all of the many trees, moss can grow like crazy.

As such we work nearly 11 months a year and I will say we do remove moss every month of the year, so there is no really ‘best’ time to remove it.

Similar to getting a haircut, it needs to happen when it needs to happen.

That being said though my favorite seasons to remove moss are in the spring and summer. Here moss is typically drier and it’s more effective to brush off the bulk of it and then apply the soft wash or powder treatment.

If you do this in the fall or winter it will still work but a lot of your chemicals will get diluted or washed away by the rain. Not that it won’t work, we still do quite a few cleanings in the rain but it’s slightly less effective.

Not to mention cleaning a roof when it’s cold and pouring rain isnt the most fun thing in the world.

So if you need to remove moss the answer is to get it done as soon as you can regardless of the season but if I had to pick the best time it would be in the dryer months like in spring and summer.
